Core Priorities
Public Safety & Health
Hector Sosa puts protecting our neighborhoods at the forefront of his work on the City Council. As former President of Gangs Out Of Downey (GOOD) with 15 years of service in youth sports and Kiwanis, Hector was instrumental in bringing stability back to City Hall while prioritizing public safety. From installing new stop signs to ensuring our Police and Fire Departments have the resources they need, Hector will always fight for the safety and quality of life of Downey families. Supported by police and fire professionals, he spearheaded Downey’s first-ever Men’s Mental Health Awareness Fair and initiated the inaugural Non-Profit Summit, ensuring that public safety includes comprehensive health and support resources for local families.
Fiscal Responsibility & Accountability
Hector Sosa believes that long-term fiscal discipline is the backbone of a thriving municipal government. Drawing on his background as a Financial Services Professional and his role as Chair of the City Council Budget Subcommittee, Hector has led efforts to steward taxpayer dollars wisely while preserving the full-service operations of all departments. Under his leadership, the city delivered its 14th consecutive balanced budgets without compromising core public services. To ensure government accountability and protect residents, Hector voted against council pay raises and opposed extending term limits. Hector will continue to prioritize maintaining strong emergency reserves.
Small Businesses & Economic Vibrancy
Understanding that small businesses drive the local economy, Hector works to cut administrative red tape and foster a welcoming commercial climate. He spearheaded a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) tiered fee structure to make starting and growing a business in Downey simpler and more affordable. His economic strategy focuses on attracting high-quality professional jobs, diversifying dining and retail options, and supporting walkable commercial areas like Downtown Downey, the Downey Landing, and the Promenade. Additionally, Hector champions local culture by helping bring regional performing arts like the LA Philharmonic and other landmark projects to the city.
Community Engagement & Strategic Partnerships
Grounded in nearly two decades of local volunteer service, Hector remains committed to transparent governance and direct community involvement. He regularly works directly with residents to resolve neighborhood concerns—such as implementing traffic safety and speed reduction measures—and emphasizes running accessible, efficient city meetings that prioritize public comment. Hector actively builds strong partnerships with the Downey Unified School District and local non-profits to support youth athletics, educational opportunities, and family-centered community programming across the city.
